Rian Elizabeth – Free Pattern

This design came about when I wanted to make a hat for a special woman in my life. She either likes hats with designs or slouchy hats. This beanie is not slouchy, but it has a very pretty tree design on it and reminds me of evergreen trees and in the red shown below makes me think of Christmas.

You can wear this with or without a pom. I think the black pom makes it look a little sexy.

Materials Needed
#5 bulky yarn (80-85 yards)
Size 9 and 10, 16” circular needles
Size 10 double pointed needles (dpn’s)
2 stitch markers
Darning/yarn needle
Measuring tape

2” x 2” = 7 stitches and 11 rows

K2tog Slip needle through 2 sts as if to knit. Knit the 2 sts together.
SSK Slip needle through 1st stitch as if to knit, slip needle through the next stitch as if to knit. Knit the two stitches together.
Sl1-k2tog-psso Slip 1 stitch knitwise, knit the next 2 stitches together, pass the slipped stitch over the k2tog.
P2tog Slip needle through 2 sts as if to purl. Purl the 2 sts together.
1/1 RC Slip stitch onto cn, hold in back, k1, then k1 from cn
1/1 LC Slip stitch onto cn, hold in front, k1, then k1 from cn

The chart for the design is at the bottom of this post if you prefer to work by chart. The first 4 rows of the chart are the ribbing of the hat and incorporate the design into it.

Ribbing

Use size 9 needles

CO 70 sts, join in the round and PM for the beginning of the round.

*At the beginning of every round slip the marker and slip the 2nd marker as you come to it (after stitch 23).

Round 1-2: P1, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p1, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p1, PM, *k2, p2* repeat between ** till the last 3 stitches, k2, p1.

Round 3: P1, 1/1 RC, p2, k2, p2, 1/1 RC, p1, 1/1 LC, p2, k2, p2, 1/1 LC, p1, SM, *k2, p2* repeat between ** till the last 3 stitches, k2, p1.

Round 4: Repeat round 1.

*If you want a taller brim before starting the body, repeat the following 3 rounds: round 1, 3, then 1 again.

Body

*Change to size 10 needles while working the first round of the body.

*Chart is provided at the end if you prefer it charted.

Round 5: p1, k2, p6, k2, p1, k2, p6, k2, p1, SM, knit until the end of the round.

Round 6: p1, 1/1 RC, p6, 1/1 RC, p1, 1/1 LC, p6, 1/1 LC, p1, SM, knit until the end of the round.

Round 7-8: Repeat round 5.

Round 9: Repeat round 6.

Round 10: p1, k2, p5, k3, p1, k3, p5, k2, p1, SM, knit until the end of the round.

Round 11: p1, k2, p5, k2tog, k1, yo, p1, yo, k1, ssk, p5, k2, p1, SM, knit until the end of the round.

Round 12: p1, 1/1 RC, p4, k4, p1, k4, p4, 1/1 LC, p1, SM, knit until the end of the round.

Round 13: p1, k2, p4, k2tog, k1, yo, k1, p1, k1, yo, k1, ssk, p4, k2, p1, SM, knit until the end of the round.

Round 20: Repeat round 14.

Round 21: Repeat round 15.

Round 22: Repeat round 16.

Round 23: Repeat round 17.

Round 24: Repeat round 12.

Round 25: Repeat round 13.

Round 26: Repeat round 14.

Round 27: Repeat round 15.

Round 28: Repeat round 10.

Round 29: Repeat round 11.

Round 30: Repeat round 12.

Round 31: Repeat round 13.

Round 32: Repeat round 5.

Round 33: p1, 1/1 RC, p6, 1/1 LC, p1, 1/1 RC, p6, 1/1 LC, p1, SM, knit until the end of the round.

Round 34: p1, k2, p7, Sl1-k2tog-psso, p7, k2, p1, SM, knit until the end of the round. (68 sts)

Round 35: P1, k2, p15, k2, p1, SM, knit until the end of the round.

Round 36: P1, 1/1 RC, p15, 1/1 LC, p1, SM, knit until the end of the round.

Round 37: Repeat round 35.

Decreases

*Change to dpn’s when the stitches no longer fit comfortably on the circular needle.

Round 38: p1, k2, p1, p2tog, p9, p2tog, p1, k2, p1, SM, *k5, k2tog* repeat between ** until the last 5 sts, k5. (60 sts)

Round 39: p1, 1/1 RC, p13, 1/1 LC, p1, SM, knit until the end of the round.

Round 40: p1, k2, p1, p2tog, p7, p2tog, p1, k2, p1, SM, *k4, k2tog* repeat between ** until the last 5 sts, k5. (52 sts)

Round 41: p1, k2, p11, k2, p1, SM, knit until the end of the round.

Round 42: p1, k2tog, p1, p2tog, p5, p2tog, p1, ssk, p1, SM, *k3, k2tog* repeat between ** until the end of the round. (41 sts)

Round 43: p1, k1, p9, k1, p1, SM, knit until the end of the round.

Round 44: p1, k2tog, p2tog, p3, p2tog, ssk, p1, SM, *k2, k2tog* repeat between ** until the end of the round. (30 sts)

Round 45: p1, k1, p5, k1, p1, remove marker, knit until the end of the round.

Round 46: *p2tog, p1* repeat between ** 3 times, [k1, k2tog] repeat between [ ] until the end of the round. (20 sts)

Round 47: *p2tog* repeat between ** 3 times, [k2tog] repeat between [ ] until the end of the round. (10 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving a 6” tail. Thread yarn needle with tail of cut yarn and draw through remaining loops. Secure in place. Weave in any ends you have.
